I’ve recently come across the work of Cal Newport. While I haven’t read any of his books, I’m especially drawn to So Good They Can’t Ignore You, his argument that it’s how we work rather than why we work that leads to fulfillment.
Even reading the book’s description has made me rethink a few things. Of course I’m passionate about directing theatre, but I’ve yet to commit to pursuing it as a full time job. I’ve been working steadily as an arts administrator, building up skills that have resulted in professional growth within that field. Does that mean I’ll be an administrator my entire life? Maybe, maybe not. But I do realize that improving skills in a certain area also leads to more enjoyment of the work.
And it’s good to get curious about what you’re really passionate about. Sure, I love directing, but why? I think it has something to do with creating an environment in which people feel empowered to make bold decisions. Or… exploring the contours of empathy and reaching new understandings of the human condition with others. Something like that.
So I’ll read this book soon and report back. I’m always down to rethink how I approach my interests and my career, and how those two things may be similar or different.

Planning to pursue your passion is a great thing, even better is going for it. Can I suggest that you shake up your sensibilities toward theatre directing by applying for a grant, taking an improvisation class or doing an acting workshop that focuses on working with space…Or you could try all 3… Just a suggestion to perhaps nudge your passion into action, you most likely have much better ideas on how to apply yourself :0)

Thank you for this. You’re absolutely right. There are many ways to turn passion into action, and a good way to start that process is to identify related skills that can be or have been the most strengthened. Having a passion is one thing, but knowing where and how to apply my focus and effort is another.
I’m learning how I can be my most productive self within my field of interest… And workshops, grants, etc. are always wonderful places to start. Thanks again!
